ChemCert Ag Vet Accreditation at AQF Level III
ChemCert Accreditation aims to provide agricultural and veterinary chemical users with the knowledge and skills to achieve established national industry competencies thus ensuring these products are used safely, accurately and efficiently.
The benefits of competent operators include reduced costs, more effective efficient control of pests, and the minimisation of any possible adverse effects. This will also help to allay community concerns regarding the personal and environmental safety aspects of farm chemical use.
The full AQF Level III course conducted over two days includes:
- The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 3 National Training Resource Manual for Ag Vet users.
- The AQF Level 3 assessment workbook
- Take home guides and notes on how to handle, store and transport chemicals safely
- A ChemCert Training Group Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment
- A ChemCert Chemical Accreditation and registration for five years
ChemCert Training comprises some of the units from levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Conservation and Land Management Training Package.
A Statement of Attainment is evidence that a participant has demonstrated competencies in the units named on the statement. The four units are:

Why do You Need to be ChemCert Certified to Work With Chemicals?
Under the Pesticides Act 1999 rules were introduced that make training compulsory for commercial users of pesticides. (From 1 September 2003 )
Pesticides can be dangerous if incorrectly applied or managed, especially to those people who work with pesticides or are regularly exposed to them. Training in their correct use will minimise mistakes being made when using pesticides. It is one of the most effective ways to protect workers who use pesticides regularly, their families, the community, trade and the environment.
What Does The Law Say?
- People who use pesticides in their business or as part of their job must be trained in how to use those pesticides.
- You must not employ or engage a person to use pesticides unless that person is trained.
- A person who is 'trained' has a ChemCert qualification that shows that they have achieved a specific level of competency in pesticide use.
- Someone who has already done a Farmcare, ChemCert or training is already qualified. This qualification remains valid for five years from the date it was completed.
- People who do not have the required qualification have to get trained or have their current skills recognised.
- People who are qualified and ChemCert Certified have to be re-assessed every five years.
What Does it Mean For You?
You must be trained if you use pesticides as part of your job or business. For example, if you apply pesticides:
- as a landlord or on behalf of a landlord
- as part of aquaculture and forestry operations
- to a golf course, sporting field or bowling green
- for a local council, government agency or statutory authority
- as part of any commercial agricultural and farming operation, including broadacre farming, horticulture, livestock, market gardening, flower growing, plant nurseries or activities such as fumigating silos or laying baits
- as part of a business, (e.g. a marina, landscape gardening or wood preservation).
Will I Need to be Retrained in The Future?
Every five years you will need to demonstrate that you understand how to use pesticides correctly as part of your job. This involves a one day refresher course, with updated manual and notes.
